Background on the Pediatrics in Practice curriculum

Bright Futures is a heath promotion/illness prevention initiative whose mission is “to promote and improve the health and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, families, and communities” through the development of educational materials for health professionals and families. A Bright Futures Health Promotion Workgroup, composed of pediatricians, educators, parents, and nurses, was formed in 1998 with the charge of developing a health promotion curriculum that addresses the key skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for child health professionals to have in order to integrate Bright Futures’ tenets into daily practice. The Pediatrics in Practice Health Promotion Curriculum is the result of the Workgroup’s efforts.

What is health promotion?
The World Health Organization defines health promotion as follows:
“Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to well-being.

Who provides the content for Pediatrics in Practice?
The Pediatrics in Practice Health Promotion Curriculum emerged from the tenets of Bright Futures, a heath promotion/illness prevention initiative whose mission is “to promote and improve the health, education, and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, families, and communities” through the development of educational materials for health professionals and families. A Bright Futures Health Promotion Workgroup, comprised of pediatricians, educators, parents, and nurses, was formed in 1998 with the charge of developing a health promotion curriculum that addresses the key skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for child health professionals to integrate Bright Futures’ tenets into daily clinical practice. The workgroup is chaired by Henry (Hank) Bernstein, DO, of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and its members come from hospitals and medical schools throughout the United States. Pediatrics in Practice is the result of the Workgroup’s efforts.
The members of the Workgroup are listed under Who's Who on this website.
