Overview: Case Discussion is used to develop analytic and problem-solving skills, and to explore solutions and various interpretations for complex reality-based issues. This teaching strategy can be especially helpful among learners with differing perspectives. Using the case-based method allows learners to develop and apply new knowledge and skills.
Applying the case-based teaching method requires reflective practice. Once a specific topic is mastered, the keys to an effective case-based teaching session are preparation and careful attention to content and group process.

this and other teaching strategies to help you build your own educator’s
portfolio.
Objectives: After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Define case method and the rationale for its use.
- Identify best practices for teaching the case method.
- Plan a case discussion exercise to support your learners in preparation for practice.
- Create an action plan for your future success as a practitioner of the case method.
Length: This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Learning Activities: To complete this online module, you must read text on the screen and link to resources provided for your review. The module includes video and/or audio clips to enhance learning, as well as Self-assessments and/or Progress Checks that will help you identify areas of understanding. An online "Journal" is available for you to (1) record your personal responses to reflective questions designed to enhance your comprehension of the content and (2) provide a place where you can take notes. In addition, there is a centralized online "Briefcase" for you to save items that you would like to access later. At the end of the module you will be directed to an evaluation.
